Yellow-browed Sparrows occur in northern South America from the eastern-slope of the Andes of Bolivia to northern Amazonia. It is replaced by the similar Grassland Sparrow (Ammodramus humeralis) in eastern South America.

It is mostly found in altitudes below 1500m in open areas such as roadsides, clearings, agricultural areas and around human habitation, and is a common species throughout most of its range.
